Famous Quotes That Were Never Said - Photo Gallery - LIFE

Few lines in movie history are as famous or as frequently quoted as Humphrey Bogart’s immortal “Play it again, Sam” from the 1942 classic, Casablanca. Too bad, then, that Bogart’s gruff-saloon-keeper-with-a-heart-of-gold, Rick Blaine, never actually utters those words. In fact, it’s Rick’s erstwhile lover, the preposterously beautiful Ilse Lund (Ingrid Bergman) who purrs to Rick’s sidekick and running buddy, Sam the piano player (Dooley Wilson): “Play it once, Sam, for old times’ sake.” Later, a slurring, morosely hammered Rick commands Sam, “You played it for her, you can play it for me. If she can stand it, I can. Play it!” Here, in hopes of setting the proverbial record straight, LIFE offers other famous quotes — both written and spoken — that, in fact, were never written, nor spoken… .
